Pilgrimage Badges

Our museum has a collection of over 350 pilgrimage badges. The oldest examples ion our collection are the 18th century bronze objects. Pilgrimage badges are a typical example of popular piety. People used them to express piety, mark the vows they made, show their worship, as a decoration piece or to show that they belong to a certain fraternity or sisterhood. Most commonly these objects were purchased during a pilgrimage as a keepsake that would remind the believers of their travels.
