Cistercian Cultural Landscape

The exhibition on the cultural landscape of the Cistercians is unique for two main reasons. First, it forms an integral part of the European project Cisterscapes, and second, it extends beyond a traditional museum display to include a hiking trail that connects visible elements of Cistercian heritage in both the immediate and wider surroundings.

Cisterscapes brings together seventeen Cistercian cultural landscapes located today in five European countries. The central aim of this ongoing project is to explore and strengthen the relationship between people and places. Within this framework, the cultural landscape of the Stična Cistercian Abbey holds a special position. In the exhibition, it is presented as an interactive 2D model that allows visitors, via smartphones and AV/VR applications, to explore the spiritual, cultural, and economic history of Stična Cistercian Abbey in a virtual way. The exhibition highlights 35 key elements of the cultural landscape, while also offering the possibility to explore the landscapes of the other sixteen monasteries. The entire database is continuously updated and freely accessible online.

The Cistercian Way is a hiking route stretching over 6,400 kilometres, linking all seventeen cultural landscapes with France, the birthplace of the Cistercian Order. It follows existing educational and walking paths special emphasis on the historical economic and artistic achievements of the Cistercians. As a relaxing complement to the museum exhibition, the route combines movement in nature with deeper insight, revealing traces of a rich and enduring cultural heritage.
