About the exhibition:
The exhibition Mount Sinai – a Symbol of Holiness presents historical photographs from the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. At its core is a unique collection of colour glass slides from the first half of the 20th century, held by the Ljubljana Archdiocesan Archives, complemented by an album of black-and-white photographs from the collection of the Slovenian Mission Centre. The exhibition was prepared in cooperation with the Slovene Ethnographic Museum and the Gorenjska Museum.
The selected photographs mainly depict sites connected with the tradition of the Book of Exodus, as well as scenes from life in the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Sinai. Research indicates that the photographic archive, created between 1925 and 1935, is very likely linked to the study journey of three Slovenian biblical scholars – Prof. Dr. Anton Jehart, Prof. Dr. Matija Slavič, and Prof. Dr. Andrej Snoj.
All three researchers were particularly interested in the study of Sinai manuscripts, especially the Sinai Euchologion, one of the oldest preserved Slavic liturgical texts (9th-11th century). The exhibition of photographs and slides takes the visitor back to a time of scholarly exploration, when the three Slovenian biblical scholars travelled by camel and car to uncover the remarkable spiritual, cultural, and historical heritage of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.
