Dear Teachers, Professors, Principals, and Headteachers,

We warmly invite you to visit and experience the authentic medieval atmosphere of Stična!

The museum is located within the Cistercian Monastery of Stična, renowned as the oldest monastery in Slovenia and the birthplace of the famous Stična Manuscript.

Our museum features several permanent exhibitions presenting:

1. The History of Christianity in Slovenia
2. Life Behind Monastery Walls
3. The Mysterious World of Medieval Scribes
4. The Cultural Landscape of the Cistercians

These exhibitions are closely connected to numerous compulsory and elective topics covered in the curricula of history, Slovenian language and literature, social studies, citizenship and civic education, and geography.

New to our museum?

If you have never visited us before and would like to get a taste of our educational programme, we have prepared a sample guided tour for first-time visitors. This will allow you to experience the tour firsthand, discover its key themes, and learn about the aspects we highlight during school visits.

Already familiar with us?

If you already know us and are looking for a fresh perspective, we invite you to join a fascinating circular walk around the monastery and explore the significance of monastic communities in their natural environment.

Throughout history, monasteries have been closely connected to the surrounding landscape. The area around Stična still bears numerous traces of the economic activities of the Cistercians. Together with Marko Okorn, museum documentarian and guide, you will discover these remarkable features while enjoying stunning panoramic views of the Stična Stream Valley, the monastery itself, and the surrounding hills.

After the guided programme, you are welcome to explore the museum independently, at your own pace, without rushing, and discover those details that there is often not enough time to see during a school visit.
